“Le Peintre” (The Painter), by famed artist Pablo Picasso, was lost in the crash of Swissair Flight 111 off Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on Sep 2, 1998.

September 2 2020 — On September 2 1998, Swissair Flight 111 hit the water off the hamlet of Peggy’s Cove (Nova Scotia)  killing all 229 passengers and crew on board instantly.  According to the plane’s manifest, Flight 111 was also transporting a diamond from a Nature of Diamonds exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, one kilogram of other diamonds, about 4.5 kilograms of other jewellery, 49 kilograms of cash, and a multimillion-dollar version of Picasso’s Le Peintre. On This Day — Korean Airliner Flight 007 Shot Down (September 1 1983) [2021]

September 1 2020 — Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (also known as KAL 007) was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul. On September 1st 1983, the airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor, near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan. President Reagan described the attack as a “massacre” and a “crime against humanity”. In fact, the US Intelligence Community knew full well that the Russians had not been able to identify the airliner and truly believed that it was a spy plane. The Memorial Wall is a memorial at the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia. It honors CIA employees who died in the line of service. There are 137 stars carved into the white Alabama marble wall. Eleven represent women.
