Lockerbie — Three Decades of Lies: J’Accuse…!
May 11 2020 – Over the last two decades, I have written over a hundred pieces about the Lockerbie tragedy.
In recent years, many people have asked me to write just a short story that summarizes my thoughts on this affair. This master of procrastination has always managed to avoid this painful task… Until today. Why now?
Chapter I : A week in December
On December 21 1988, N739PA, the aircraft operating the transatlantic leg of Pan Am Flight 103 broke up in flight over the Scotland. All 243 passengers and 16 crew die as well as 11 residents of Lockerbie. This horrific crime has been called the world’s biggest unsolved murder.
Within an hour and 25 minutes, American helicopters were on site. A senior Scottish politician once famously remarked: “Americans had guessed, at a very high level, what had gone wrong.”
Chapter II : The Usual Suspects
When Pan Am 103 exploded over Lockerbie on December 1988, Bush was already deep-knee in a very serious scandal: the Iran-Contra affair.
And now, on top of that scandal, Bush needs to bury the truth about Lockerbie and he must quickly find a suitable culprit for this terrorist attack.
In such desperate situation, the recipe has always been the same. You try to use both problems to neutralize each other.
Chapter III – Operation Autumn Leaves
The similarities between the facts recorded during West German Police operation ‘Autumn Leaves’ and the Lockerbie indictment are so striking that no reasonable person will accept that such nearly identical stories could have happened independently of each other just by coincidence.
Indeed, only a child would believe such a fairy tale.
Chapter IV – The ‘Wait and See’ Strategy
On March 16 1989, Paul Channon, the then British Secretary of State for Transport, lunched five journalists at the Garrick Club.
Channon told them — off-the-record — that the Lockerbie killers had been identified and would soon be arrested. The Lockerbie investigation seemed to be over.
But then, a political earthquake rattled the capital of Iran. And by the time the tremors were felt in Washington and London, George Bush and Lady Thatcher understood that the ‘Lockerbie Solution’ had to be put on hold until the smoke cleared.
Chapter V – Blame it on Gaddafi!
On November 14 1991, the Scotland Lord Advocate (Lord Fraser of Carmyllie) and the acting United States Attorney General (William Barr) jointly announced that they had obtained warrants for the arrest of two Libyan citizens for their role in the bombing of Pan Am 103.
On November 27 1991, the British and United States Governments issued a joint statement calling on the Libyan government to surrender the two men for trial.
Chapter VI – A spectacular miscarriage of Justice
On January 31 2001, Fhimah was found not guilty. His co-accused Megrahi was convicted of mass murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years.
I regard the Lockerbie verdict against Megrahi as a Grand Monument to Human Stupidity. Indeed, the written opinion of the Lockerbie judges is a remarkable document that claims an ‘honoured place in the history of British miscarriages of justice.’
I sincerely hope that the readers will come to share my belief if they do not already think so.
Chapter VII — The SLALOM Shirt
PT/35(b) — the infamous timer fragment linking Lockerbie to Libya — was discovered in the collar (evidence PI/995) of a grey “Slalom” shirt.
Lockerbie experts have long noticed that the story of this shirt is highly suspicious.
After years of research, I have come to the conclusion that this item was planted among the evidence in the Autumn of 1989.
The technical documents regarding PI/995 will be posted in Appendix A of this book.
Chapter VIII – PT/35(b) — The most expensive forgery in History
PT/35(b) is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
PT/35(b) is a small fragment of a timer circuit that, according to the Lockerbie verdict, triggered an IED onboard Pan Am 103.
PT/35(b) was allegedly found among the debris of Pan Am 103 near the town of Lockerbie.
After many years of study and research, I have come to the conclusion that PT/35(b) is a forgery that was planted among the debris to implicate Libya in the bombing of Pan Am 103.
Chapter IX – Diabolical Endgame
On March 11 2020, the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission [SCCRC] decided to refer the Lockerbie case back to the High Court of Justiciary for determination.
As a result of the Commission’s decision, Mr. Megrahi’s family was therefore entitled to instruct an appeal against his conviction.
To many observers, the SCCRC decision marks the beginning of Justice. I am afraid that I share neither their joy, nor their hopes.
The Devil is in the detail. And a careful reading of the SCCRC statement of reasons indicates that all hopes of Justice have already been annihilated.
Chapter X – What Happened to Pan Am Flight 103?
Over the last three decades, there have been two, and only two, widely accepted theories about Lockerbie: Libya or else Iran & the PFLP-GC.
In this chapter, I wish to explore and demonstrate that another theory is available. Unlike the others, this theory respects Logic and the Sciences. And this explanation is provable for a simple reason. It is the plane TRUTH.
Chapter XI – J’accuse!
On December 21 1988, N739PA — the Boeing 747 aircraft operating the transatlantic leg of Pan Am Flight 103 — broke up in flight over Scotland. All 243 passengers and 16 crew died as well as 11 residents of Lockerbie. This horrific crime has been called the world’s biggest unsolved murder.
The three Lockerbie judges wrote [Court Opinion] :
 At 1903 hours on 22 December 1988 Pan Am flight 103 fell out of the sky. The 259 passengers and crew members who were on board and 11 residents of Lockerbie where the debris fell were killed. The Crown case is that the cause of the disaster was that an explosive device had been introduced into the hold of the aircraft by the two accused whether acting alone or in concert with each other and others.
 It is not disputed, and was amply proved, that the cause of the disaster was indeed the explosion of a device within the aircraft. Nor is it disputed that the person or persons who were responsible for the deliberate introduction of the explosive device would be guilty of the crime of murder.
Pan Am Flight 103 disintegrated in flight over Lockerbie on December 21 1988 — not December 22 — because of a massive structural failure due to well-known issues of metal fatigue in section 41 and 42 of the Boeing 747, not because of an explosive device.
Perhaps, someone should have written a foreword to the court opinion. I would suggest the following warning: “This verdict is based on a fictional story. Any similarity with real events or characters is purely coincidental.”
In this final chapter, I would like to expose some of the characters who certainly played an important role in one of the greatest cover-up in modern history. One should never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, but, as Einstein argued, don’t rule out malice!
