On This Day — Pan Am Flight 103 disintegrates over Lockerbie (December 21 1988) [UPDATE : Libyan PM : “I will never hand Senussi to the Americans.”]

“Operation El Dorado Canyon (1986) turned out to be a more decisive blow against Libyan-sponsored terrorism than I could ever have imagined. There were revenge killings of British hostages organized by Libya, which I bitterly regretted. But the much-vaunted Libyan counter attack did not and could not take place. There was a marked decline in Libyan-sponsored terrorism in succeeding years.”

On This Day — The Good Traitor — Remembering George Blake (November 11 1922 — December 26 2020)

“Communism was an ideal which, if it could have been achieved, would have been well worth it. I thought it could be, and I did what I could to help it, to build such a society. It has not proved possible. But I think it is a noble idea and I think humanity will return to it.”

George Blake

“Looking back on my life, everything seems logical and natural.”

December 26 2022 — George Blake — one of the famous “moles” in British intelligence — spied for the Soviet KGB during the 1950s before being arrested in 1961 and sentenced to 42 years in prison. Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

On This Day — CIA COS Richard Welch Is Assassinated in Athens (December 23 1975)

“The CIA and the Ford White House quickly saw Welch’s murder as a political windfall. At a time when the CIA was under assault from Congress and Bush’s nomination was in peril in the Senate, there was now a dead CIA hero to mourn.”

James Risen
The Intercept
(December 8 2018)

Richard Welch — CIA Chief of Station in Athens

December 23 2022 — On December 15, 1975, a Senate committee opened hearings on whether George H.W. Bush should be confirmed as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. It was not going to be a slam dunk. When the CIA Chief of Station was assassinated on December 23 1975, Bush quickly rewrote the history of this tragedy for his own political advantage. And later, his lies became the “truth”.  Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

One Year Ago — Havana Syndrome : Conspiracy Theorists, Truth Deniers, Scientists and Spies [UPDATE : The story of Dr. Leonid Ber]

“It is the role of intelligence to identify and characterize threats to the nation and to sift what is likely true from what is probably false. But the public has gotten very little useful or meaningful information from our intelligence agencies. They could do better.”

Steven Aftergood
Federation of American Scientists

Dr. Garry Nolan is a Professor of Pathology at Stanford University. His robust resume—300 research articles, 40 US patents, founding of eight biotech companies, and honored as one of Stanford’s top 25 inventors—makes him, easily, one of the most accomplished scientists publicly studying UAPs.

December 14 2021 — To most people, 2021 has been a miserable year. But UFO aficionados, Science fiction wizards and real mystery wonks have the time of their lives. The US Defense Department has appointed an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force to investigate “incursions of unauthorized aircraft.” The CIA has established a task force to investigate the cause of the “Havana Syndrome.” And, last but not least, POTUS asked the ODNI to find out if COVID-19 is man-made.

Despite a $85 billion annual budget, the US Intelligence Community could not provide definitive answers to any of these big scientific mysteries. In the absence of clear evidence, people react in different ways. Enthusiasts feel vindicated while deniers reject even the known facts. And then, there is a handful of people who work hard to solve these cases. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

LOCKERBIE — Analysis of the New Indictment [UPDATE : Lockerbie 3rd suspect taken into U.S. custody]

“The urgent imperative now is extraditing Masud here to face swift and sure justice. The two men who earlier stood trial for the murders — in the Netherlands, under Scottish law — escaped full punishment.”

Editorial: Justice for Lockerbie

On This Day — Did the CIA Kill Father Louis Thomas Merton? (January 31 1915 — December 10 1968) [New Book: Thomas Merton’s Betrayers]

“The very thoughts of a person like me are crimes against the state. All I have to do is think, and immediately I become guilty.”

Father Louis Merton —  A Signed Confession of Crimes against the State

The Dalai Lama was 33 years old when he met father Merton. “I often describe him as a very, very strong bridge between Catholic tradition and Buddhist tradition,” says the Dalai Lama reflecting on his meeting with him.

December 10 2022 — Thomas Merton (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion. On May 26, 1949, he was ordained to the priesthood and given the name Father Louis. In the years since his death, Merton has been the subject of several biographies. Fifty years later, his death remains mysterious. In 1997, James W. Douglass claimed that Merton had been assassinated by agents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 2016, theologian Matthew Fox made a similar claim. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

On This Day — Remembering Gary Webb “DARK ALLIANCE” (August 31 1955 – December 10 2004)

“I was you once. Gary, I started down this road. Though nowhere near as far as you are. When they saw I wasn’t gonna stop, they ‘controversialized’ me. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about? They make *you* the story. And you have a history of schizophrenia, you’re a liar, you’re a homo, you beat your dog, you’re a pedophile, it doesn’t matter if none of it’s true. The point is no one remembers what you found. They remember you and you’re nuts. You cease to exist.”

‘Fred Weil’ — Kill the Messenger

December 10 2022 — On December 10 2004, investigative journalist Gary Webb died of two .38 caliber gunshot wounds to the head. Quite logically, the coroner ruled the death a suicide. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY
