On This Day — Soviet Union Launches SPUTNIK (October 4 1957)

“On 4 October 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched the Sputnik-1 earth satellite into space—an achievement that stunned the American public and press, but not the U.S. policy and intelligence communities. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) reported the advancements that led to this landmark launch to President Eisenhower, providing him with the strategic advantage to guide the U.S. response.”

CIA (October 4 2017)

On October 4 1957, the Soviet Union launched SPUTNIK-1 into an elliptical low Earth orbit. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses.

Its radio signal was easily detectable even by amateurs, and the 65° inclination and duration of its orbit made its flight path cover virtually the entire inhabited Earth. This surprise success precipitated the American

Sputnik crisis and triggered the Space Race, a part of the Cold War. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

October 2 — International Wrongful Conviction Day

“63% of the 513 people exonerated by members of the Innocence Network are people of color. This Wrongful Conviction Day, the Innocence Network is standing up to help fix the criminal justice system by raising awareness about the role that racial bias plays in wrongful convictions.”

Wrongful Conviction Day

“Since 31 January 2001 — the day the guilty verdict against Abdelbaset Megrahi was announced by the Scottish Court at Camp Zeist — I have made no secret of my belief in his innocence. His conviction, on the evidence led at the trial, was nothing short of astonishing. It constitutes, in my view, the worst miscarriage of justice perpetrated by a Scottish criminal court since the conviction of Oscar Slater in 1909 for the murder of Marion Gilchrist.”

Professor Robert Black — October 26 2008

October 2 2018 — Today marks the 5th anniversary of Wrongful Conviction Day. The most common reasons for wrongful convictions are mistaken eyewitness accounts, false confessions, official misconduct, and false accusation. Those who are known to have been wrongfully convicted have spent an average of 10.7 years in prison. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

50 Years Ago — The Tlatelolco Massacre (October 2 1968)

“The situation will be under complete control very shortly.”

Fernando Gutiérrez Barrios (Head of Mexican Federal Security) — Message to the CIA (September 26 1968)

“The horrific nature of the Tlatelolco killings was made worse by the fact that, as a policy, it seemed to achieved its aims – the student movement was crushed, hopelessness prevailed, and the PRI had consolidated its power. A key part of this was suppression of the idea that the massacre ever happened at all – the official death toll remained under 30.”

Felix Bazalgette  — El Grito: the film banned for revealing the truth about Mexico in 1968

Fifty years ago, a group of student protesters were gunned down in the middle of a square in Mexico City. At the time, authorities tried to cover up the true scale of what happened, but the Mexican government has now accepted it was a state crime.

In 2002, President Vicente Fox appointed Ignacio Carrillo Prieto to prosecute those responsible for ordering the massacre. In 2006, former President Luis Echeverría was arrested on charges of genocide. However, in March 2009, the genocide charges against Echeverria were dismissed.

Despite the ruling, prosecutor Carrillo Prieto said he would continue his investigation and seek charges against Echeverria before the United Nations International Court of Justice and the Inter-American Human Rights Commission. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

One Year Ago — US Spies & the Havana Syndrome

“If the facts are confirmed and if the effects are indeed caused by a physical device, I find  the microwave explanation far more likely than a sonic attack. If this is indeed the case, I expect to hear nothing further in the future because the truth would sent a wave of panic through the Telecom industry.”

INTEL TODAY (October 3 2017)

“This happened during the Cold War to personnel stationed in the US embassy in Moscow when the Soviets were bombarding the embassy with microwaves to monitor oral communications in the ambassador’s office.”

Dr Joel Moskowitz — Community health professor at the University of California, Berkeley

“Until the government of Cuba can ensure safety of our people, we will be reduced to emergency personnel.”

US state department official

“In the more distant future, weapons systems based on new principles  — beam, geophysical, wave, genetic, psychophysical and other technology — will be developed. All this will, in addition to nuclear weapons, provide entirely new instruments for achieving political and strategic goals. Such high-tech weapons systems will be comparable in effect to nuclear weapons but will be more ‘acceptable’ in terms of political and military ideology.”

One Year Ago — Mark Zaid Responds to Allegations He betrayed Former CIA Jeffrey Sterling

“The CIA advised that on February 24, 2003, it was contacted by Mark Zaid and Roy Krieger. They told the CIA on February 24 that a client of theirs had contacted them on February 21, 2003, and that that client, that unnamed client at the time voiced his concerns about an operation that was nuclear in nature, and he threatened to go to the media.”

Ashley Hunt — FBI witness at the Jeffrey Sterling trial

“Because he just formed a new whistleblower group with John Napier Tye, there as been renewed interest in allegations an FBI Agent made during the Jeffrey Sterling case about attorney Mark Zaid. But there was actually a second detail regarding Zaid released just after the trial that has not been publicly reported: Zaid was interviewed by the FBI, twice, and was even interviewed before Sterling himself was.”

Marcy Wheeler aka Emptywheel

“I do know for a fact that nothing I have ever said to the FBI could ever be construed in a way unfavorable to Jeffrey Sterling. (…) This ‘analysis’ is a disservice to Jeff, who continues to proclaim his innocence of doing anything wrong.”

Mark S. Zaid — September 27 2017

October 2 2017 — Marcy Wheeler — aka “Emptywheel” — is an American independent journalist specializing in national security and civil liberties.

In a recent post published on her own blog, she suggests that US Attorney Mark Zaid may have somehow betrayed his former client (ex CIA) Jeffrey Sterling while interviewed by the FBI.

At the time, FBI considered Senate Intelligence Committee staffer Bill Duhnke a more likely suspect than Sterling. Zaid responded to the allegation. His answer is worth reading carefully. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

On This Day — Gadhafi Target of U.S. Disinformation [October 2 1986 — Bob Woodward]

“Your White House, specifically your national security adviser, constructed an operation whereby the free press in this country was going to be used to convey a false story to the world, namely that Qaddafi was planning new terrorist operations.”

New York Times (October 3 1986)

“There is a wonderful book that you might read… And the title of it is from a quote from Winston Churchill: ‘In time of war, the truth is so precious, it must be attended by a bodyguard of lies.'”

Secretary of State George P. Shultz (October 3 1986)

14 March 1986 — Reagan Strikes on Tripoli and Benghazi

On October 2 1986, Bob Woodward (Washington Post) published an extraordinary story: “Gadhafi Target of Secret U.S. Deception Plan”. Under orders from the White House, the US Intelligence Community was planting false information in the US media.

If you read this blog, chances are they you are familiar with the Iran-Contra Affair. At the same time, it is quite likely that you have never heard of a major US scandal that was running parallel to the Iran-Contra Operation.

The two operations were in fact two branches of a single policy. If the delivery of weapons to Iran was the “Carrot” part of the plan suggested in the 1985 “Fuller MEMORANDUM“, the disinformation regarding “Libyan terrorism” was the “Stick”.

I would argue that one must know and understand this ‘old story’ in order to understand past cases, such as the Lockerbie Affair, or current ones such as the Salisbury Novichok attacks. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

Havana Syndrome — TIMELINE [GAO Findings]

“State entities began responding to the incidents in early 2017, but M/PRI was not made aware of the incidents until mid-August 2017, when a former M/PRI official contacted the office after seeing media reports.”

GAO — REPORTED INJURIES TO U.S.PERSONNEL IN CUBA (July 2018)

The United States Government Accountability Office has released a rather disturbing report. M/PRI — the office responsible to investigate incidents that may meet the Accountability Review Board statute criteria — was not aware of the situation of US personnel in Havana — which had been reported in late 2016 — until they read about it in the US media in August 2017.
