Remembering Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr (November 9, 1914 – January 19, 2000) [2020]

“We began talking about the war, which, in the late summer of 1940, was looking most extremely black. Hedy said that she did not feel very comfortable, sitting there in Hollywood and making lots of money when things were in such a state. She said that she knew a good deal about munitions and various secret weapons … and that she was thinking seriously of quitting MGM and going to Washington, DC, to offer her services to the newly established Inventors’ Council.”

George Antheil — Composer, pianist and inventor

A 1940s shot of Lamarr, ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’

November 9 2020 — Often called “The Most Beautiful Woman in Films,” Hedy Lamarr’s beauty and screen presence made her one of the most popular actresses of her day. It is however much less known that Lamarr was also an inventor who, along with composer George Antheil, patented a frequency-hopping system during World War II that presaged Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology. KRYPTOS 30 Years Anniversary — SECTION III : A Transposition Cipher

With trembling hands, I made a tiny breach in the upper left hand corner… widening the hole a little, I inserted the candle and peered in… at first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle to flicker. Presently, details of the room emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold – everywhere the glint of gold. For the moment – an eternity it must have seemed to the others standing by – I was struck dumb with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to stand in suspense any longer, inquired anxiously “Can you see anything?”, it was all I could do to get out the words “Yes, wonderful things”.

Howard Carter — The Tomb of Tutankhamen (Diary — November 26 1922)

November 8 2020 — In a previous post, we looked at the inside story of the NSA people who took the challenge to decrypt — part of — the KRYPTOS code. I will tell you later how the NSA people broke Section III but today I will present a novel and rather unusual solution.

Why? Because I have great doubts that Sanborn — an artist — has used complex mathematical transformation to code Section III. Who cares? Does it matter anyway? One would think that as long as the solution is correct, the method used to get it is irrelevant. One could be wrong. The devil IS in the detail. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

On This Day — Able Archer 1983 : The Brink of Apocalypse (November 7-11, 1983) [2020]

“Information about the peculiar and remarkably skewed frame of mind of the Soviet leaders during those times that has emerged since the collapse of the Soviet Union makes me think there is a good chance—with all of the other events in 1983—that they really felt a NATO attack was at least possible and that they took a number of measures to enhance their military readiness short of mobilization. After going through the experience at the time, then through the post-mortems, and now through the documents, I don’t think the Soviets were crying wolf. They may not have believed a NATO attack was imminent in November 1983, but they did seem to believe that the situation was very dangerous. And US intelligence had failed to grasp the true extent of their anxiety.”

Robert Gates — CIA Deputy Director for Intelligence during Able Archer 83

November 7 2020 — Able Archer 83 is the codename for a command post exercise carried out in November 1983 by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Coordinated from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Casteau, Belgium, it involved NATO forces throughout Western Europe. This exercise began on November 7, 1983 and ended on November 11, 1983. Today, many historians believe that the world almost came to a nuclear war on that week. KRYPTOS 30 Years Anniversary — SECTION I : A KEYED Vigenère Cipher [And why does the CIA lie so much about it?]

“I have developed much too thick a skin to be surprised, let alone upset, by people telling me how that great CIA tells us the truth. If an organisation accustomed to lying tells you it is telling the truth, where does that leave you?”

Dr Jim Swire — Father of Flora (1965 – Lockerbie December 21 1988)

Letter to INTEL TODAY

November 7 2020 — The story of the — partial —  KRYPTOS decoding by CIA David Stein is very beautiful and inspiring. But is it a true story or a fairy tale? It is my opinion that this narrative can simply not be trusted for multiple reasons. Allow me to explain why. The reader will draw his/her own conclusions. On This Day — Richard Sorge Executed for Espionage (November 7 1944)

“Richard Sorge’s brilliant espionage work saved Stalin and the Soviet Union from defeat in the fall of 1941, probably prevented a Nazi victory in World War II and thereby assured the dimensions of the world we live in today.”

American writer Larry Collins

November 7 2020 — On October 18, 1941, Richard Sorge was arrested in Tokyo. He was hanged on November 7 1944, at 10:20 Tokyo time in Sugamo Prison. A number of famous personalities — from General Douglas MacArthur to James Bond’s father and former MI6 Ian Fleming — considered him one of the most accomplished spies. Sorge is proof that one spy can alter the History of our world. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

35 Years Ago — Colombia Palace of Justice Under Siege (November 6 1985)

“Colombia has moved on… Colombia has forgotten the Palace of Justice siege.”

Ana Carrigan — “The Palace of Justice: A Colombian Tragedy”

November 6 2020 — The Palace of Justice siege (Toma del Palacio de Justicia in Spanish) was a 1985 attack against the Supreme Court of Colombia, in which members of the M-19 Marxist guerrilla group took over the Palace of Justice in Bogotá and held the Supreme Court hostage, intending to hold a trial against President Belisario Betancur.  Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

KRYPTOS 30 Years Anniversary — History of the NSA Involvement

“Maintaining secrecy about the sculpture became a challenging part of creating Kryptos. Both Jim and I were under scrutiny by the media who wanted badly to know the answer. To be honest, I don’t know the answer. After Jim finished the sculpture, I never went back to check the code.”

Edward Scheidt  — Former CIA Head of Cryptography

November 6 2020 — The ciphertext on the left-hand side of the sculpture (as seen from the courtyard) of the main sculpture contains 869 characters in total (865 letters and 4 question marks). The right-hand side of the sculpture comprises a keyed Vigenère encryption tableau, consisting of 867 letters. In our last posts about KRYPTOS, we learned how to break a Vigenère code and we apply this knowledge to the entire section II. In this post, we look at the inside story of the NSA people who took the challenge to decrypt — part of — the KRYPTOS code. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

Four Years Ago — Why the CIA & MI6 Love to Hate Putin [UPDATE — RUMINT : Russian President to step down in January 2021]

“With the majority vote for Brexit against the strong preference of Scotland and Northern Ireland for remain, we have shown ourselves quite capable of inflicting potentially fatal harm to our national stability all by ourselves. Why would we need Russia to do it for us?”

The Guardian — 1st November 2016

“Putin has become a symbol of national sovereignty in its battle with globalism. That turns out to be the big battle of our times. As our last election [2016] shows, that’s true even here [in the US].”

Christopher Caldwell

“We have been here in St. Petersburg for about a week now. And virtually every person we have met on the street says what they respect about you is they feel that you have returned dignity to Russia, that you’ve returned Russia to a place of respect. You’ve been in the leadership of this country for 17 years now. Has it taken any sort of personal toll on you?”

Megyn Kelly — Interview with President Vladimir Putin

November 6 2016 — Here is a simple question: Why on earth are Western Intelligence Agencies — and their servile media — spending so much time and energy to depict Russian President Vladimir Putin as an evil monster? Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading
