Havana Syndrome: New Findings from U.S. Intel

“If the facts are confirmed and if the effects are indeed caused by a physical device, I find the microwave explanation far more likely than a sonic attack.”

February 9, 2026 — Michael Beck, the first U.S. intelligence officer to report symptoms later associated with what became known as Havana Syndrome, passed away on January 29, 2026, at the age of 65. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at 45. In 2014, Beck filed a workers’ compensation claim citing hazardous working conditions. The claim was denied by the NSA. Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, reportedly acquired a device through an undercover operation in the final weeks of the Biden administration.

The purchase — costing several million dollars — was funded by the Department of Defense.

According to CBS News, “the device is portable, backpack-sized, and contains components of Russian origin.”

The device has reportedly been under testing for more than a year and is said to emit pulsed radio waves. Media reports have not disclosed the operating frequency.

A forthcoming book, The Havana Syndrome, by Michael Rey and Oriana Zill, is scheduled for release on November 15, 2026.

The book is expected to credit Intel Today for its early analysis and for coining the term “Havana Syndrome.”

For the record — The expression “Havana Syndrome” was coined by Dr. Ludwig De Braeckeleer and appeared for the first time in a story published by the Intel Today blog on October 3 2017. [Here is the tweet] Why would Wikipedia dispute such a simple fact?

“The possibility of attack by microwaves still gives me pause. The technology exists to give someone a frightening but not acutely damaging experience by inducing mechanical disturbances to the vestibular system using pulsed microwaves.”
