UPDATE (January 10 2023) — The Vatican’s promoter of justice, Alessandro Diddi, has reopened the case.
Diddi confirmed the reopening of the investigation to LaPresse after it was first reported by the news agency Adnkronos, which said “all files, documents, reports, information and testimonies” connected to the case would be re-examined in order to clarify an array of questions and “leave no stone unturned”.
Why now? Well, the inquiry comes a few months after the release on Netflix of Vatican Girl… (See my last update.) But this may be just a coincidence.
On the other hand… In his book (due to be published in two days), Georg Gänswein, the long-time personal secretary and close confidante of the late ex-pope Benedict, writes about Orlandi.

UPDATE (October 22 2022) — “Vatican Girl” : New four-part Netflix series
The Daily Beast previewed the four-part series ahead of its release.
No documentary to date cuts as close to the bone in the nearly 40-year-old cold case. Tombs have been unearthed, gangsters’ lovers have been interviewed, and international terrorist plots parsed in trying to understand if Orlandi is alive, and, if not, who killed her and why.
Director Mark Lewis unveils a number of new pieces to the puzzle, including the rarely mentioned fact that Orlandi disappeared the day Pope John Paul II was in Poland addressing hordes of Solidarity followers (who were rumored to have been funded by Vatican money with ties to the mafia). He also introduces a new witness who claims that Orlandi, who lived inside the Vatican fortress, was sexually assaulted by a cardinal and that the secret was used to blackmail the church. Lewis told The Daily Beast that sifting through a story with so many leads meant taking some distance. “Crime stories like this have layers of journalism that get laid down like leaves,” he said. “The story has a succession of theories, a succession of clues to work through.” (…)
What sets this docuseries apart is how Lewis has woven a tapestry from the most far-fetched conspiracy threads on the case, including the attempt on the life of John Paul II by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, and how Orlandi might have been kidnapped by the KGB to silence him. (…)
Lewis also relies on the charismatic Italian journalist Andrea Purgatori, who spent his career obsessing on the case, as his noble guide. At one point in the second episode, Purgatori sums up the central theme, that all the crimes tied to the conspiracies around Orlandi were committed “by the same people—the mafia—with the same target—the Vatican—and the same message: Give us back our money.” (…)
Will we ever know what happened to the Vatican girl? Probably not, but as Pietro Orlandi, brother of the victim, sums it up, “The only thing I know for sure is that the Vatican knows the truth.”
No general comments at this point in time. Obviously, I do not want to spoil the moment. Watch this series very carefully. And, as always, draw your own conclusions…
However, I would like to make it clear that I have great esteem for Italian journalist Andrea Purgatori. Do you remember the case of the USTICA [Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870] tragedy?
For years, the official story was that terrorists had planted a bomb. Since day one, Andrea Purgatori disputed this nonsense, and claimed that Flight 870 was shot by a NATO plane.
Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 — with 81 people on board — was indeed shot down by a NATO fighter of still unidentified nationality.
The terrorist bomb was merely an idiotic conspiracy theory intended to cover up the horrific reality of this case. [Over the years, more than a dozen of officials have committed suicide…]
As the readers of this blog know, I believe that the Lockerbie tragedy was not caused by a bomb, but bya massive structural failure due to well-known issues of metal fatigue in section 41 and 42 of the Boeing 747.

UPDATE (July 12 2019) — Bone fragments found during construction work at the Vatican’s embassy to Italy could hold the clue to this 35-year-old mystery.
In March 2019, the Orlandi family received an anonymous letter — with a photo of an angel above a tomb — saying Emanuela’s body might be hidden in the Teutonic cemetery next to St. Peter’s Basilica. “Look where the angel is pointing.”
And thus, on July 11 2019, the Vatican opened the two graves suggested in the anonymous letter. Searchers did not find Emanuela’s bones. Actually, they found no remains at all.
Officials were expecting to find at least the bones of Princess Sophie von Hohenlohe, who died in 1836, and Princess Carlotta Federica of Mecklenburg, who died in 1840, but there was no trace of either.
“The result of the search was negative. No human remains or funeral urns were found,” the Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said.

The disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi
Orlandi was the fourth of the five children of Ercole and Maria Orlandi. Her father was an employee of the Institute for the Works of Religion (the “Vatican Bank”). He and his family lived inside Vatican City.
Orlandi was in her second year at a liceo scientifico (a scientific high school) in Rome. Although the school year had concluded, she continued to take flute lessons three times per week at the Tommaso Ludovico Da Victoria School, connected with the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. She was also part of the choir of the church of Sant’Anna dei Palafrenieri in the Vatican.
Orlandi usually travelled by bus to the music school. She would get off the bus after a few stops and then walk six or seven hundred feet (180 to 210 meters).
On June 22 1983, Orlandi was late to class. She later explained her tardiness in a phone call to her sister, during which she said she had a job offer from a representative of Avon Cosmetics.
Her sister suggested she talk it over with their parents before making any decisions. Orlandi allegedly met with the Avon rep shortly before her music lesson. At the end of the lesson, Orlandi spoke of the job offer with a girlfriend, who then left the girl at a bus stop in the company of another girl.
