On This Day — Gerald Bull Is Assassinated in Brussels (March 22, 1990)

“Who murdered the 62-year-old artillery genius? (…) No one has stepped forward to claim responsibility. However, senior Israeli intelligence officials in several recent interviews with us have claimed responsibility for the slaying. (…) The killing was ordered after Mossad, Israel’s secret foreign-intelligence service, gathered information that Bull was working with Iraq in the production and acquisition of mass destruction weapons for Iraq.”

William Scott Malone and David H. Halevy — Washington Post (February 10, 1991)

March 22 2022 — Gerald Vincent Bull was a Canadian engineer who developed long-range artillery. He moved from project to project in his quest to economically launch a satellite using a huge artillery piece, to which end he designed the Project Babylon “super-gun” for the Iraqi government. Bull was assassinated outside his apartment in Brussels, Belgium, on March 22 1990. The case was never solved. Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

“The Iraqi don’t have air superiority over Israel. The solution they can have is the supergun. It has such long ranges, it’s going to hit strategic targets like Israel.”

Avraham Bar-David

Former Israeli artillery chief

During the months before the assassination, Bull’s apartment suffered several non-robbery break-ins, probably as a threat or a warning.

On March 22 1990, he was assassinated. Bull was shot (7.62 mm) twice in the neck and 3 times in the back at point blank range while approaching the door of his apartment in Brussels.

The gun was silenced. No one heard the shots or witnessed the assassination. The killer took the time to collect the bullet-casings.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the key still in his door and his unopened briefcase containing nearly $20,000 in cash. The assassin was never identified.

Usual Suspects

Considering that Gerald Bull was working on the Iraqi Super-gun, Iran and the Mossad are the most obvious culprits.

For less obvious reasons, MI6, the CIA,  and even the South African intelligence services, may also have decided to terminate Gerald Bull.

Today, the MOSSAD is usually regarded as the “official” culprit. Although it makes sense, I am far from convinced.

Many people, beside the usual suspects, had a very good reason to want Gerald Bull dead.

Among others, this list includes Lady Thatcher and a few folks from the Belgian Deep State.

In January 2003, there was rumor that Belgium considered reopening a probe into the murder of Gerald Bull, amid new suspicions that the Mossad was responsible.

According to an informant, a piece of jewellery (possibly a bracelet) was taken from Bull and kept by the assassin.

Nothing ever happened. This is a cold case. And I do not expect Belgium to ever solve it.

Nevertheless, I will give the Belgian investigators some credit. They did not rule Gerald Bull’s death a suicide.

The “Official” Culprit : Mossad

According to investigative journalist Gordon Thomas, the assassination of Bull had been sanctioned by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.

“Nahum Admoni sent the three-man team to Brussels, where the Mossad agents shot Bull at his door-step. Within hours after the killing, according to Thomas, Mossad was engaged in distributing false stories to the European media, alleging that Bull had been shot by agents from Iraq.

Although it was in the immediate interest of both Israel and Iran that Bull discontinue his co-operation with Saddam Hussein, he had worked for many different parties in many critical defence projects, and had become both an asset and a liability for several powerful groups at the same time.

Due to Bull’s past ventures, it has been speculated that besides Iran or Israel, the CIA, MI6, or the Chilean, Syrian, Iraqi, or South African government could have been behind his assassination.

Project Babylon was stopped when supergun parts were seized by Customs in the United Kingdom in November 1990, and most of Bull’s staff returned to Canada. The smaller test gun was later broken up after the Gulf War.” [Wikipedia]
