CIA Memorial Wall — A quick note about the 37 classified stars

“The names of the remaining 37 officers must remain secret, even in death.”

June 5 2021 — The Memorial Wall is a memorial at the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia. It honors CIA employees who died in the line of service. There are 137 stars carved into the white Alabama marble wall. Of the 137 stars the wall now holds, 37 remain classified. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

A special page  “CIA Book of Honor” has been created. This will allow you to find easily the references to the stars we have already written about. I will try to keep this page up to date.

Prior to September 11 2001, 78 stars were chiseled into the CIA marble Memorial wall. 59 stars have been added since 9/11.

Today, the number of stars has thus grown to 137. That number is easily checked and you can count for yourself the stars — on the picture above — chiseled in the memorial wall.

According to the CIA, “37 remain classified, including the years, locations, and details of the work that led to the deaths.” [ MIL & INTEL — Lauren Coontz (May 26, 2021)]

I am not sure where this number (37) come from.

I believe that only 4 of the first 78 stars (pre 9/11 2001) are still classified to this day. You can check my post : The CIA Memorial Wall — The First 78 Stars .

Unidentified 1965

Unidentified 1978

Unidentified 1984

Unidentified 1989

And I can only count 32 classified stars since 2001, including 4 names known to the media: Glen A. Doherty, Tyrone S. Woods, Ranya Abdelsayed and Nathan Chapman. See the special page  “CIA Book of Honor for details.

2008 — 2 new stars (89)

2009 — 1 new star  (90)

2010 — CIA Memorial Ceremony June 7 2010 — 12 new stars — 5 Classified

2013 —  4 new stars

2014 — May 19 2014— 4 new stars (111) — Memorial Wall’s 40th anniversary

108 — Classified [known to be Glen A. Doherty]

109  — Classified [known to be Tyrone S. Woods]

110  — Classified

111 — Classified [known to be Ranya Abdelsayed]

2015 — May 18 2015 — 2 new stars (113)

112 — Classified [known to be Nathan Chapman]

113 — Classified

2017 — CIA Memorial Ceremony May 2017 — 8 new stars (125) — 4 Classified

121 — Mark S. Rausenberger (The circumstances of his death remain classified.)

122, 123, 124 & 125 — Classified

2018 — CIA Memorial Ceremony May 2018 — 4 new stars (129)

2019 — CIA Memorial Ceremony May 2019 — 4 new stars (133) — 2 classified

2021 — 4 new stars (137)

But this only accounts for 36 classified stars?!?

Perhaps one could add the star of Mark S. Rausenberger as the circumstances of his death remain classified.

Did I make a mistake? Can you spot it? Let me know…

“The Memorial Wall now has 137 stars. (…) This year (2021) marks the beginning of a somber chapter in the legacy of the Memorial Wall. The Agency carved new stars for the first time above the inscription.”
