“US officials in Central America failed to address this drug issue for fear of jeopardising the war efforts against Nicaragua … and senior US policymakers were not immune to the idea that drug money was a perfect solution to the Contras’ funding problems.”
US Senator John Kerry

UPDATE (May 29 2019) — Colombian cocaine production hit record levels in 2017, according to newly released UN statistics.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says production rose about 31% year on year to some 1,400 tonnes, cultivated on 171,000 hectares. It is estimated that the potential production of cocaine has a value of 2.7 billion dollars in the local market.

The United States is deeply concerned about an increase in coca cultivation in Colombia, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on January 2 2019, during a visit to the Andean country.
“The United States remains deeply concerned about the surge in coca cultivation and cocaine production in Colombia since 2013.”
“We will continue to work with you Mr. President side-by-side to achieve our joint objectives to cut coca cultivation and coca production by 50 percent between now and 2023,” Pompeo said.
Perhaps, someone forgot to tell Pompeo that President Ivan Duque is a protégé of former President Álvaro Uribe Velez (August 7, 2002 – August 7, 2010).
Alvaro Uribe was a “close personal friend of Pablo Escobar”. In fact, they are related but the former President has dropped the ‘Escobar’ part of his name.

UPDATE – Washington, D.C., May 26, 2018 — A Colombian senator told the U.S. Embassy in 1993 that the founders of the Medellín drug cartel “financed” the election campaign of then-senator Álvaro Uribe Vélez, according to documents posted today by the National Security Archive.
The newly-released cables describe nearly a decade of U.S. Embassy interactions with Uribe and show that U.S. diplomats had persistent concerns about Uribe’s ties to drug trafficking even as Embassy officials developed a working relationship the rapidly rising political leader.
“Escobar, through the Ochoas, is now demanding Uribe return the favors by trying to open a communication channel to [Colombian President César] Gaviria,” a U.S. Embassy cable states.
In the early 1980s, Alvaro Uribe appointed Villegas Arciniegas as director of planning for Colombia’s Civil Aviation Administration. Villegas Arciniegas delivered the much-needed operating licenses to well-known narcotraffickers.
Frechette, who followed Busby as U.S. Ambassador to Colombia, told El Nuevo Herald in 2009 that he was never satisfied with Uribe’s explanation as to why he named Villegas Arciniegas for the post. “How did you come to hire Villegas?” he asked Uribe. “You do know that Villegas without a doubt gave those licenses to the narcos?”
There was a massive increase in extrajudicial killings by the Colombian Army during Uribe’s presidency (the “false positives” scandal).

Members of his government, through the DAS intelligence agency, illegally surveilled and intimidated a long list of political opponents, including journalists, judges and human rights activists.
Uribe’s cousin, Mario Uribe Escobar, is serving a sentence for his involvement with paramilitary groups.
In December 2012, General Mauricio Santoyo, who was President Alvaro Uribe’s security chief, was sentenced to 13 years in jail for links with narco-paramilitaries by a federal court in the United States.
Uribe’s brother, Santiago Uribe Vélez, is now on trial for leading a death squad knowns as the 12 Apostles.
uribe’s niece, Ana Maria Uribe Cifuentes, was placed on the US Treasury’s list of people identified as acting on behalf of drug trafficking or terrorist organizations.
Her mother, Dolly Cifuentes Villa, was arrested in 2011 after a request from a US federal court for alleged ties to the head of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Recently it was revealed that the Colombian Supreme Court is investigating Álvaro Uribe himself for murder and witness intimidation connected to an investigation of crimes committed by members of the Metro Bloc, an illegal paramilitary militia group allegedly formed by Uribe and members of his family.
