CNN has apologized to the subject of the article, disabled links to the story and admitted it does not “meet editorial standards.
The story was posted on the network’s website on Thursday and was removed, with all links disabled, Friday night. CNN immediately apologised to Anthony Scaramucci, the Trump transition team member who was reported to be involved in the meeting.
The retracted story had said the Senate intelligence committee was looking into a 16 January discussion between Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by US entities in Russia. Scaramucci, in the story, said he exchanged pleasantries in a restaurant with Dmitriev.
The report also said that two Democratic senators wanted to know whether Scaramucci had indicated in the meeting whether sanctions against Russia would be lifted, a decision that could impact the investment fund.
About Anthony Scaramucci
Anthony Scaramucci (born January 6, 1964) is an American entrepreneur, financier, political figure, and author.
On January 12, 2017, President Donald Trump announced his intent to appoint Scaramucci Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs.
Scaramucci’s swearing-in was reportedly delayed by an extended review of his finances by the Office of Government Ethics, although the ethics office denied that clearance was necessary before making White House appointments. Ultimately, George Sifakis was appointed instead.
Following the 2016 election, Scaramucci served on the Presidential Transition Team Executive Committee.
In 2005, Scaramucci founded global investment firm SkyBridge Capital, serving as co-managing partner before selling the company in early 2017 to take a role in the Trump administration. [Wikipedia]
