Juan Pablo Escobar’s second book— which has just been released in Argentina — describes his father’s international ties of corruption in which he had an active participation.

“He did not make the money alone. US agencies allowed him access to this money. He had direct relations with the CIA.”

These allegations are not completely new… In 1996, Gary Webb  detailed the CIA- Drug connection in an investigative series “Dark Alliance” published by the San Jose Mercury News. Eventually, Gary Webb committed suicide; he shot himself twice in the head.

In 1989, the official US government investigation, headed by John Kerry, concluded:

“There was substantial evidence of drug smuggling through war zones on the part of individual Contras, Contra suppliers, Contra pilots, mercenaries who worked with the Contras, and Contra supporters throughout the region …

US officials in Central America failed to address this drug issue for fear of jeopardising the war efforts against Nicaragua … and senior US policymakers were not immune to the idea that drug money was a perfect solution to the Contras’ funding problems.”

The commission also found evidence that CIA agents were aware of cocaine-trafficking activities by Contras and did nothing about them.

Political Connections? ‘El NARCO 82’

President Álvaro Uribe Vélez of Colombia — August 7, 2002 – August 7, 2010 — was a “close personal friend of Pablo Escobar”. In fact, they are related but the former President has dropped the ‘Escobar’ part of his name.

According to a 1991 DIA document, Alvaro Uribe — then a Senator — was “dedicated to collaboration with the Medellín [drug] cartel at high government levels.” (Note: Alvaro Uribe had been the mayor of Medellín when Escobar ‘owned’ the city.
