On This Day — CIA COS Richard Welch Is Assassinated in Athens (December 23 1975)

“The CIA and the Ford White House quickly saw Welch’s murder as a political windfall. At a time when the CIA was under assault from Congress and Bush’s nomination was in peril in the Senate, there was now a dead CIA hero to mourn.”

James Risen — The Intercept (December 8 2018)

Richard Welch — CIA Chief of Station in Athens

December 23 2021 — On December 15, 1975, a Senate committee opened hearings on whether George H.W. Bush should be confirmed as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. It was not going to be a slam dunk. When the CIA Chief of Station was assassinated on December 23 1975, Bush quickly rewrote the history of this tragedy for his own political advantage. And later, his lies became the “truth”.  Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

5G Belgium — Chaos Across the Spectrum [UPDATE — Boeing and Airbus Warn US Transportation Secretary]

“The interferences caused to GSM-R receivers have been a very strong concern for Railway operators over the last years. Several cases of interference have been reported in various Member States, causing non-acceptable operational and even safety issues.”

EU Agency for Railways

May 31 2019 — Belgium’s telecoms regulator, the Belgian Institute for Post and Telecommunications (BIPT), has begun a public consultation to assess interest in using the 26GHz band for 5G services. Amazingly, the document does not say one word about possible interferences with — for instance — very important weather satellites. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

On This Day — Pan Am Flight 103 disintegrates over Lockerbie (December 21 1988)

“Operation El Dorado Canyon (1986) turned out to be a more decisive blow against Libyan-sponsored terrorism than I could ever have imagined. There were revenge killings of British hostages organized by Libya, which I bitterly regretted. But the much-vaunted Libyan counter attack did not and could not take place. There was a marked decline in Libyan-sponsored terrorism in succeeding years.”

Margaret Thatcher — The Downing Street Years (Memoirs 1993, pp 448-9)

December 21 2021 — On December 21 1988, N739PA — the Boeing 747 aircraft operating the transatlantic leg of Pan Am Flight 103 — broke up in flight over Scotland. All 243 passengers and 16 crew died as well as 11 residents of Lockerbie. This horrific crime has been called the world’s biggest unsolved murder. Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

The August 4 2020 Beirut Explosion — Debunking the FBI Conspiracy Theory [UPDATE : Malice or Stupidity?]

“The amount of ammonium nitrate that blew up at Beirut port last year was one fifth of the shipment unloaded there in 2013, the FBI concluded after the blast, adding to suspicions that much of the cargo had gone missing.”

Reuters (July 30 2021)

August 10 2021 — FBI forensic scientists have estimated that around 552 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded on August 4 2020 in the Port of Beirut, much less than the 2,754 tonnes that arrived on a Russian-leased cargo ship in 2013. Reuters, The Guardian, and other MSM are reporting this nonsensical junk-science report without even consulting scientific experts. Let me be very clear. This is total nonsense. On This Day — Did the CIA Kill Father Louis Thomas Merton? (December 10 1968) [New Book: Thomas Merton’s Betrayers]

“The very thoughts of a person like me are crimes against the state. All I have to do is think, and immediately I become guilty.”

Father Louis Merton —  A Signed Confession of Crimes against the State

The Dalai Lama was 33 years old when he met father Merton. “I often describe him as a very, very strong bridge between Catholic tradition and Buddhist tradition,” says the Dalai Lama reflecting on his meeting with him.

December 10 2021 — Thomas Merton (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion. On May 26, 1949, he was ordained to the priesthood and given the name Father Louis. In the years since his death, Merton has been the subject of several biographies. Fifty years later, his death remains mysterious. In 1997, James W. Douglass claimed that Merton had been assassinated by agents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 2016, theologian Matthew Fox made a similar claim. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

Two Years Ago — GCHQ boss reveals real reason behind his resignation (February 25 2019) [UPDATE : Watchdog misled over reason for resignation]

“After Father Edmund Higgins pleaded guilty to child sexual imagery offences in 2013, we submitted a character reference on our knowledge of him to the court in good faith. His subsequent criminal actions appalled us and have shown that our judgment was completely wrong.”

Former GCHQ Boss Robert Hannigan (Feb. 2019)

February 25 2021 — The sudden announcement of Robert Hannigan’s resignation in January 2017 surprised many and the news fueled suspicions that GCHQ had been spying on Trump’s team. At the time, the true reason behind his departure was kept secret but it was finally revealed in February 2019. Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today

Introducing ‘Random Thoughts’ [December 2021]

“Be a free thinker and don’t accept everything you hear as truth. Be critical and evaluate what you believe in.”

Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC)

The painting “Random Thoughts” by Sandy Welch

December 17 2021 — Dear Friends, Today (as a result of what is going on with Facebook) I decided to launch a new feature: The Intel Today ‘Random Thoughts’ page. Many readers send me their tips and suggestions through various media: Twitter, Facebook, blog comments and email. Thus, I believe that it would be helpful if all this information could be posted in one place. Once in a while, I will also post my own questions. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

Four Years Ago — US Spies & the Havana Syndrome : Are health effects caused by pulsed microwaves?

“This happened during the Cold War to personnel stationed in the US embassy in Moscow when the Soviets were bombarding the embassy with microwaves to monitor oral communications in the ambassador’s office.”

Dr Joel Moskowitz — Community health professor at the University of California, Berkeley

December 14 2017 — US Investigators still don’t know what caused “diplomats” to suffer severe health problems in Cuba. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

Havana Syndrome — Conspiracy Theorists, Truth Deniers, Scientists and Spies

“It is the role of intelligence to identify and characterize threats to the nation and to sift what is likely true from what is probably false. But the public has gotten very little useful or meaningful information from our intelligence agencies. They could do better.”

Steven Aftergood — Federation of American Scientists

Dr. Garry Nolan is a Professor of Pathology at Stanford University. His robust resume—300 research articles, 40 US patents, founding of eight biotech companies, and honored as one of Stanford’s top 25 inventors—makes him, easily, one of the most accomplished scientists publicly studying UAPs.

December 14 2021 — To most people, 2021 has been a miserable year. But UFO aficionados, Science fiction wizards and real mystery wonks have the time of their lives. The US Defense Department has appointed an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force to investigate “incursions of unauthorized aircraft.” The CIA has established a task force to investigate the cause of the “Havana Syndrome.” And, last but not least, POTUS asked the ODNI to find out if COVID-19 is man-made.

Despite a $85 billion annual budget, the US Intelligence Community could not provide definitive answers to any of these big scientific mysteries. In the absence of clear evidence, people react in different ways. Enthusiasts feel vindicated while deniers reject even the known facts. And then, there is a handful of people who work hard to solve these cases. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY
