On This Day — Did the CIA Kill Father Louis Thomas Merton? (January 31 1915 — December 10 1968) [New Book: Thomas Merton’s Betrayers]

“The very thoughts of a person like me are crimes against the state. All I have to do is think, and immediately I become guilty.”

Father Louis Merton —  A Signed Confession of Crimes against the State

The Dalai Lama was 33 years old when he met father Merton. “I often describe him as a very, very strong bridge between Catholic tradition and Buddhist tradition,” says the Dalai Lama reflecting on his meeting with him.

December 10 2022 — Thomas Merton (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion. On May 26, 1949, he was ordained to the priesthood and given the name Father Louis. In the years since his death, Merton has been the subject of several biographies. Fifty years later, his death remains mysterious. In 1997, James W. Douglass claimed that Merton had been assassinated by agents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 2016, theologian Matthew Fox made a similar claim. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

On This Day — Remembering Gary Webb “DARK ALLIANCE” (August 31 1955 – December 10 2004)

“I was you once. Gary, I started down this road. Though nowhere near as far as you are. When they saw I wasn’t gonna stop, they ‘controversialized’ me. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about? They make *you* the story. And you have a history of schizophrenia, you’re a liar, you’re a homo, you beat your dog, you’re a pedophile, it doesn’t matter if none of it’s true. The point is no one remembers what you found. They remember you and you’re nuts. You cease to exist.”

‘Fred Weil’ — Kill the Messenger

December 10 2022 — On December 10 2004, investigative journalist Gary Webb died of two .38 caliber gunshot wounds to the head. Quite logically, the coroner ruled the death a suicide. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

On This Day — Whitey Bulger Sentenced to Two Terms of Life Imprisonment (November 14, 2013) So, why the death sentence? [UPDATE — IG Report : Incompetence and policy deficiencies contributed to Bulger’s death.]

“[Special counsel Robert Mueller] is the guy who kept four innocent people in prison for many years in order to protect the cover of Whitey Bulger as an FBI informer.”

Alan Dershowitz  — Harvard Law Professor emeritus

“Long before he became FBI Director, serious questions existed about Mueller’s role as Acting U.S. Attorney in Boston in effectively enabling decades of corruption and covering up of the FBI’s illicit deals with mobster Whitey Bulger and other top echelon informants who committed numerous murders and crimes.”

Coleen Rowley — Retired FBI special agent and Division legal counsel

November 14 2018 — On November 14 2013, Whitey Bulger was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment, plus five years.  Obviously, two lifetimes will go by quickly if a FBI informant is dropped in a prison filled with dangerous criminals working for the mafia. Whoever decided to transfer Bulger to the notoriously violent Hazelton facility knew that he would not survive very long. So, why was he sentenced to death? Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

Ten Years Ago — Remembering CIA Jennifer Matthews (December 6 1964 – December 30 2009) [UPDATE : Just a few words…]

“Those who fell yesterday were far from home and close to the enemy, doing the hard work that must be done to protect our country from terrorism. We owe them our deepest gratitude, and we pledge to them and their families that we will never cease fighting for the cause to which they dedicated their lives—a safer America.”

Former CIA Director Leon Panetta
 December 31, 2009

The Memorial Wall is a memorial at the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia. It honors CIA employees who died in the line of service. There are 133 stars carved into the white Alabama marble wall. At least ten represent women.

December 30 2019 — On December 30 2009, Jennifer Lynne Matthews was wounded when a Jordanian doctor — who she hoped could lead them to top al-Qaida operatives — blew himself up as he came to meet with the intelligence agents. She died in a helicopter on the way to a hospital. Matthews was the CIA chief at Forward Operating Base Chapman, a station near the mountainous Afghanistan/Pakistan border. On This Day — Did The CIA Murder US Army Scientist Frank Olson? And Why? (November 28 1953) [UPDATE — New documents: Frank Olson’s death was connected to a specific program]

“If this would have been a suicide, it would have been very difficult to accomplish. There was motive to kill him. He knew the deepest, darkest secrets of the cold war. Would the American government kill an American citizen who was a scientist, who was working for the CIA and the army, if they thought he was a security risk? There are people who say: ‘Definitely.’”

Stephen Saracco
Retired New York assistant district attorney (2019)

November 28 2022 — Wormwood is a 2017 American six-part docudrama miniseries directed by Errol Morris and released on Netflix on December 15, 2017. The series follows a scientist who participates in a secret government biological warfare program. In the final chapter, legendary American journalist Seymour Hersh states that he believes the CIA murdered Frank Olson.

Although he has a source that backs up this story, Hersh refuses to speak out because the story would expose how his source acquired the necessary information. Hersh claims he knows what Frank did that got him killed.  But he does not reveal it.

In this post, I suggest the most likely explanation. I agree with Eric Olson and Hersh Seymour. The death of Frank Olson was neither an accident — induced or not by LSD — nor a suicide. But Frank Olson was not merely murdered. I suggest that Olson was “legally assassinated” to prevent him from revealing an ugly truth. Prior to her death in 1994, Alice Olson told her children:“Korea really bothered your father.” As always, your feedback is welcome! Follow us on Twitter:  @INTEL_TODAY

On This Day — Did Richard Nixon Frame Alger Hiss? [December 6 1948 – The Pumpkin Papers]

“As to whether Nixon would actually have gone as far as to frame Hiss, the later record includes disquieting instances of forgery or planting false information.”

The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon
Anthony Summers

December 6 2022 — Ever since Alger Hiss’s perjury prosecution in 1949-1950, it has become a virtual consensus that “the Baltimore documents… were evidence of betrayal of U.S. diplomatic information to a foreign power, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.” But were these papers really so damning? Were they actually genuine? And is the case really closed as the CIA claims?  One thing is certain. The case remains controversial, important and relevant to current issues. Five Years Ago — Profumo Affair Christine Keeler Has Died (December 4 2017)

“However I dress it up, I was a spy and I am not proud of it.”

Christine Keeler

Lewis Morley’s 1963 portrait of Christine Keeler became an iconic image of the cold war. This picture is one of the most famous and most imitated photographs ever published.

December 4 2022 — On December 4 2017, Christine Keeler, the model embroiled in the 1963 Profumo affair, died aged 75. The Profumo affair was a very British scandal which uncovered a secret world of sex, horse-play, drinking orgies and spying, in high places, in which Ms Keeler shared her favours with Mr Profumo, and Commander Eugene Ivanov, the Soviet assistant naval attaché in London. The crisis forced John Profumo to quit his job as war secretary and ultimately contributed to the downfall of the Tory government the following year. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

“I WOULD LIKE TO CALL THE ATTENTION OF THE JAMAICAN PRESS AND PEOPLE TO THE FACT THAT THE CURRENT CIA CHIEF OF STATION HERE [NORMAN DESCOTEAUX], AND TWO OF THE OPERATIONS OFFICERS ARRIVED IN KINGSTON DURING THE MIDDLE AND LATTER PART OF LAST YEAR PRIOR TO THE INITIATION OF VIOLENCE.”

The gunmen shot Marley in the chest and arm. His manager, Don Taylor, was shot in the legs and torso. Astonishingly, there were no fatalities.
