One Year Ago — Former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn Charged Over False Statements to FBI (December 1 2017)

“General Flynn is a wonderful man. I think he has been treated very, very unfairly by the media, as I call it, the fake media in many cases. And I think it is really a sad thing that he was treated so badly.”

President Donald Trump — News conference on February 15 2017. (Two days after Mr. Flynn’s resignation)

December 1 2017 — General Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump’s ex-national security adviser, has pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI in January 2017.

As part of his plea bargain, Michael Flynn has signed a “statement of the offence” that includes a timeline of the last week of December 2016. In the TIMELINE at the end of this post, I have added this ‘official timeline’ (with the dates of these statements written in bold).

As far as I can tell, these statements are entirely consistent with all the facts which were known so far. I have found no inconsistencies. I can only conclude that Flynn is almost certainly telling the truth about these events.

We also learned, for the first time, that Jared Kushner — at the request of the Israel Prime Minister — wanted to interfere with an upcoming UN vote. Kushner is thus, almost certainly, guilty of violation of the LOGAN ACT, whatever the current status of this law.

The White House is now branding Flynn “a lying liar who lies” but there is at least one good reason to believe that Flynn was indeed acting under the order of a senior member of Trump transition team. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

Norway & Russia– Former Border Inspector Behind Bars in Moscow on Charges of Espionage [UPDATE IV]

“Frode must come home, and Norwegian authorities must do what they can to get him out. It is not a good signal when such a positive and distinguished bridge-builder like Frode is arrested, it is not a good sign.”

Kirkenes town Mayor Rune Rafaelsen

“Once again we see the effects of big politics hitting us here locally, and we demand an end to that!”

Father Torbjørn Brox Webber

“I would not characterise the case as a global attack on bilateral relations. We have a relationship with Norway which develops in different areas. These kind of things happen, and it is uncomfortable, [but] our national legislation provides for adequate measures.”

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (December 28 2017)

Frode Berg, a 62 retired border inspector, was arrested by Russian security service agents in downtown Moscow on December 5th 2017. He is jailed  in isolation at the high-security Lefortovo prison.

Berg was allegedly caught receiving classified material about the Russian Navy that he is accused of planning to hand over to Norwegian and U.S. intelligence agencies. Berg claims that he was duped into working for Norway’s national intelligence agency.

On October 30 2018, the Moscow City Court has upheld the expanded arrest until December 5 2018.

On Friday (November 30 2018), the court decided to prolong his arrest for another two months. Follow us on Twitter: @Intel_Today Continue reading

CIA Directors — George H. W. Bush (June 12, 1924 – November 30, 2018)

I think we should think of the CIA as a national asset that must be preserved as a vital part of our defense system. . . It is important that the American people understand the intricate job the CIA is doing in an increasingly complex world. It is essential we have the support of the American People.”

George H.W. Bush — Speech in San Antonio, Texas, 1978

“George H.W. Bush led a life of exemplary public service, integrity, and determination—in WWII, in Congress, as UN Ambassador, Envoy to China, CIA Director, and as Vice President & President. A life very well lived; an American who made us all proud. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Former CIA Director John Brennan (December 1 2018)

“We’ve lost a great champion of the Agency—an accomplished Director, faithful advocate, and dear friend—with the passing of former President George H.W. Bush. As a heroic Navy pilot in the Second World War, a skilled statesman who deftly managed the collapse of the Soviet Union and liberated Kuwait from Saddam Husayn’s aggression, and a committed citizen who remained engaged in public service throughout his later years, President Bush exemplified the virtues of patriotism, duty, and compassion. Officers here at the George Bush Center for Intelligence and deployed around the globe honor the memory of a great American. On behalf of the men and women of CIA, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family.”

CIA Director Gina Haspel (December 1 2018)

George H.W. Bush’s tenure as Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) marked a turning point for the Agency as it came out of a period of great controversy. He is credited with restoring focus and boosting morale, and he remains one of the most beloved directors in the Agency’s history. George Bush is the only former Director of Central Intelligence to become President. Follow us on TWITTER: @INTEL_TODAY Continue reading

Two Years Ago — Will Trump Target Iran?

“I would not have made [the agreement], but we will not get a great deal out of ending it now.”

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (November 2016)

“One of the most discouraging aspects of the filling out of the Donald Trump cabinet is the array of Iran haters that seem to be lining up in the foreign policy and national security areas. Trump has been personally advocating sensible policies relating to Russia and Syria but he appears to have gone off the rails regarding Iran, which just might be attributed to those who are giving him advice.”

Former CIA Phil Giraldi (November 2016)

“Come! We are waiting.  You start this war, but we will finish it.”

Major-General Soleimani — Head of the elite Quds Force (November 2018)

Havana Syndrome — Another Canadian Diplomat Struck by Mysterious Illness

“I do not believe that our military, our diplomats around the world or here at home are safe. Because this weapon system is creating havoc.”

Laura Hughes — Mother of Catherine Werner

“My gut is that this has been going on for a while. The NSA has revealed to me in an unclassified setting that a foreign power has used a microwave weapon against people.”

Mark Zaid — Washington DC attorney with a practice focus on National Security Law

November 30 2018 — Another Canadian diplomat in Cuba has fallen ill, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 13. Two Years Ago — French DGSI Lacks Big Data Mining Tools, Turns to PALANTIR For Help

“We have a plan to lower our exposure to U.S. components. We’ve had experiences that have led us down this path. I cannot give precise examples… We’ve had some difficulties. We know these difficulties are seemingly for strategic reasons but in reality they’re often because of competition. We’re not fooled. I don’t think I would offend anyone if I say that.”

French Defense Minister Florence Parly (September 2018)

“IN-Q-Tel operates in the shadow”

Wall Street journal

“I was appointed to develop Palantir France, make it one of Palantir Technologies’s most important pillar by enabling the company to enter new industrial and governmental markets. We are committed to investing in the French high-tech ecosystem in a sustainable way. I want to make out of Palantir a key player of the French Tech ecosystem.”

Fabrice Brégier (Le Figaro. October 4, 2018)

Lockerbie 30th Anniversary — Should You Trust The New York Times?

“The evidence of a possible Libyan link, first reported publicly this week by the French newsmagazine L’Express, was confirmed and detailed by American officials involved in the investigation of the Pan Am bombing.”

MICHAEL WINES — The New York Times (October 9 1990)

“Howard R Teicher proposes to shame France into joining in some action… White House might have to go around the [French] civilian government and rely on military to military channels… as political channels have failed earlier this year. Given the stated desire of some French general officers to cooperate with us against Gadhafi, we might actively encourage them to sell the proposal to their civilian leadership. CIA DDI Richard Kerr and Tom Twetten were sent to the White House to explain what the CIA could do to apply psychological pressure on Gaddafi. Twetten said it would be no problem for the CIA to plant false stories in publications abroad to unnerve Gaddafi.”

National Security Council  Letter — Operation VECTOR ( August 7 1986)

“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. I will add that the man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Thomas Jefferson — Reply to John Norvell (1807)

Michael Wines is a national correspondent for The New York Times and writes about voting and other election-related issues. Since coming to The Times in 1988, he has covered the Justice Department, the American intelligence community, the White House, the 1992 presidential campaign, Congress, the environment and, for nearly 15 years, news and life in Russia and surrounding states, southern Africa and China. Before coming to The Times, he was a reporter in the Washington bureau of The Los Angeles Times. [NYT]

On October 9 1990, Michael Wines penned a very important story. According to American Government investigators involved in the Pan Am 103 inquiry (Lockerbie), Libyan intelligence agents were the culprits who had assembled and planted the bomb that destroyed the plane.

In the previous post — LOCKERBIE 30th Anniversary — Dirty Tricks & Tribulations in Senegal — I provided all the documents related to the February 1988 arrests of two Libyan citizens in Dakar: Police records, interviews, precognitions, CIA cables, decisions of justice, etc… These original documents allow us to check unambiguously the veracity of the information reported by Michael Wines in his crucial piece. Lockerbie 30th Anniversary — PT/35(b) : Dirty Tricks & Tribulations in Senegal

“The [official] story of the Senegal timer is simply out of an American serialized novel.”

Jean Collin —  Secretary-General to the Senegal Government and Minister of State 1981-90

“After the recent interview of Collin, it is now more clear than ever that the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the ‘boxed MST-13 timer’ in Senegal must be clarified beyond doubt. The whole essence of the ‘MST-13 timers’ is the sole manufacture by the Mebo company in world terms and the explicit distribution to the Libyan ESO. Unless we can consolidate the precise number of MST-13 timers circuit boards manufactured to fit the ‘boxed timers’ and confirm the fact they were distributed, solely to the Libyans, then we have serious problems with our direct evidence.”

Stuart Henderson — Lockerbie Senior Investigating Officer (MEMO March 1991)

“The Americans knew all about this operation and were in Senegal. The CIA have seen all the items recovered from the three persons. They carried out detailed examinations of these items and at the end of it said the material was defective. The French also arrived and they too carried out detailed examination and spent 2 days sifting through them and at the end of it appeared to be of the same opinion as the Americans that the material was defective.”

Babacar Gaye — Senegalese “Colonel de Gendarmerie”

Jean Collin — Secretary-General to the Senegal Government and Minister of State 1981-90

The story of the two Togo timers is weird and murky. But the story of the Senegal timer  — as Jean Collin, the number 2 man in the country at the time, once explained to the Lockerbie investigators —  is simply out of an American  “serialized novel”.

To mark the 30th Anniversary of the Pan Am 103 tragedy, INTEL TODAY will re-post one of our best Lockerbie stories every Wednesday until the end of the year. We would like to know what you think. Please, take this poll and encourage your friends to participate.

On This Day — Did The CIA Murder US Army Scientist Frank Olson? And Why? (November 28 1953)

“The most efficient accident, in simple assassination, is a fall of 75 feet or more onto a hard surface.”

CIA assassination manual (1953)

“What Wormwood tries to do is tell a story about how we know what we know and how reliable is that knowledge.”

Errol Morris — Documentary Director

“You think that finding the answer to this is gonna restore the path of your own life. But how can it possibly do that if you’ve lost yourself along the way?”

Eric Olson (Wormwood)

Wormwood is a 2017 American six-part docudrama miniseries directed by Errol Morris and released on Netflix on December 15, 2017. The series follows a scientist who participates in a secret government biological warfare program. In the final chapter, Seymour Hersh states that he believes the CIA murdered Frank Olson.

Although, Hersh has a source that backs up this story, Hersh refuses to speak out because the story would expose how his source acquired the necessary information. Hersh claims he knows what Frank did that got him killed.  But he does not reveal it. In this post, I suggest the most likely explanation. As always, your feedback is welcome!
