Rob Joyce — the White House cybersecurity coordinator and Trump’s cyber adviser — announced General Nakasone’s nomination in a Twitter post on February 13 2018.
General Nakasone was the first nominee to lead the NSA to face a confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee. He was easily confirmed in late April.
General Nakasone succeeds Admiral Michael Rogers, who has led the NSA and Cyber Command since 2014.
Since October 2016, Nakasone has been commanding chief of Army Cybercom and head of the Joint Task Force Ares unit that offers cyber support to the military against the Islamic State militant organization.
There is an ongoing debate regarding the dual-hat position. Some have argued that the job should be split into two with one person leading the cyber command and another running NSA.
The NSA employs about 38,000 civilian and military personnel, and about 17,000 contractors providing support. Cybercom has about 7,000 personnel.
