“They blinked. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I turned to the stars and whispered, ‘John’s star is here.’ I moved to the wall and gently touched the star I knew was his. They followed me, Lora’s small hand lovingly and gently taking mine. Tyler slipped his arm protectively around me, both sharing my newly revealed sadness.”

In June 1970, John Peterson joined the CIA as a contract officer assigned to the Special Operations Division within the Directorate for Plans, now known as the Directorate of Operations.
He quickly advanced through foundational training, completing the Junior Officer Training Course, jump school, and the Basic Operations Course, all of which equipped him with the skills essential for field operations.
By June 1971, Peterson was deployed to Pakse, Laos, where he served as a paramilitary operations officer.
In this role, he managed a 1,300-man battalion of Lao irregular forces, leading complex defensive operations against North Vietnamese troops moving through the region.
His primary focus was on disrupting enemy supply lines and fortifying defenses along the Ho Chi Minh trail in southern Laos, a critical area for North Vietnamese military logistics during the war.
Last Mission
By fall 1972, John Peterson was deeply involved in CIA operations in Laos, working to counter a significant offensive by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Vietcong forces in the region.
His responsibilities included advising local field commanders, training irregular troops, and coordinating critical logistics for their movements and supplies.
Known for his commitment and bravery, Peterson frequently led by example, often joining his troops in perilous helicopter infiltration missions into contested areas.
Death
On October 19, 1972, Peterson was on a helicopter as part of a troop infiltration mission near Saravane, Laos, when the aircraft was struck by enemy ground fire.
The helicopter went down and caught fire, killing Peterson upon impact.
His fellow troops, committed to retrieving his body, undertook a difficult, two-day journey through the jungle to bring him to a safer extraction point.
Peterson was 27 years old at the time of his death.
Memorial Wall and Book of Honor
John Peterson is honored with one of the original 31 stars on the CIA Memorial Wall at the Agency’s headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
Initially, his sacrifice remained anonymous, as did the identities of many early officers commemorated there. However, his name is now inscribed in the CIA Book of Honor.

“Many could argue – and did – that Mike Deuel and the others who died in Laos died for naught, that their efforts failed to sway events. But tough the mission ultimately failed, their grit is still quietly celebrated at Langley by the aging few who knew them, particularly those from the agency class of 1961. They remember Deuel not as a casualty of war, but the standard-bearer of their class and generation.”
